In this still Nomads creative research project, six artists have created interpretive responses through a showcase of migration stories and archival documents. Each bring a creative lens to a historical moment, critically exploring the socio-politics contexts that shaped the permanent relocation of Horn of African communities. Each artist invites you to reflect on the moments between the complexities of displacement and identity.

Artists

  • Guled Elyas

    EXHIBITION CURATOR & ARTIST

Guled Elyas is an architecturally trained multi-disciplinary artist. From his studio “guled.archive”, Guled explores the connections and memories between people and their environment through architecture and research driven art, particularly the connection to context through a cultural and historical lens. Through abstract and documentation techniques Guled uses photography and videography heavily to critic and investigate. Born in Dire Dawa, Ethiopia, Guled moved to Melbourne (Narrm/Birrarangga) where he currently calls home

  • Nadia Faragaab

    ARTIST

Nadia creates art that lives between worlds. Through mixed media, installations, and performance, she explores the threads that link past and present, weaving stories of identity, resilience, and transformation. Inspired by a sense of belonging to a heritage from which she was once uprooted, Nadia’s work invites others to reflect on their own connections to place, culture, and change.

A DJ and theatre maker, Nadia believes art should be accessible to all, and her projects often bring creative expression into everyday life. She collaborates with schools, community groups, and women’s organisations in Melbourne to ensure that young people and women, especially those on the fringes, can explore art, culture, and the joy of creative self-expression.

  • Sára

    ARTIST

Based in Melbourne (Naarm), Sára is an Eritrean-Australian multidisciplinary digital artist and storyteller. With a Bachelor of Arts in Literature and Film Studies and over five years of experience in nonprofit communications, Sára brings together videography, editing, content creation, and writing to drive social impact. Whatever the medium, her creative work is driven by a dedication to building a more connected and empathetic world.

  • Beaziyt Worcou

    CROSSROADS GRAPHIC DESIGNER & ARTIST

A graphic designer working within the art and cultural sector to produce various forms of printed matter. They have a particular interest in working with and for bla(c)k and First Nations cultural workers to publish work specific to these communities.

  • Ammar Yonis

    ARTIST

Ammar is a first-generation Harari-Australian writer and filmmaker based in Melbourne’s west. His work blends fiction with lived experiences to explore narratives in a different light.

  • Abdullahi Yusuf

    ARTIST

Abdullahi Yusuf is an award winning cinematographer and photographer of Somali background based in Melbourne. The evolution of Abdullahi’s craft has since morphed into cinematography that centres, uplifts and celebrates stories from the African-Australian Diaspora through short films, music videos and showcasing his work at several exhibitions across Melbourne.
